21st Century Neurology is celebrating twenty years of caring for the people of Arizona and surrounding states. This division of Xenoscience was founded as a private practice in April 2001 to change the way neurological care was delivered. Our founder is Dr. Stephen Flitman, a board-certified neurologist who trained at the Barrow Neurological Institute (Phoenix, Arizona) and completed his fellowship in Cognitive Neuroscience at the prestigious National Institutes of Health (Bethesda, Maryland). He served as Associate Director, then Director of Cognitive Neurology Section at Barrow until 2001.
Dr. Joshua Tobin joined the practice in August 2006, specializing in migraine and medico-legal examinations, and retired after fifteen distinguished years.
Dr. Paul Bendheim joined the practice in December 2012, specializing in memory loss, and retired after five distinguished years.
Shannon Murphy, PA-C joined the practice in December 2021 then moved on to primary care.
Kathleen Callahan, PA-C joined the practice in December 2021 and is seeing patients independently with support from Dr. Flitman when needed. She performs many neurological procedures such as Botox, Xeomin, Dysport, and nerve block injections for pain management. She manages many different types of neurostimulators including DBS, VNS, Inspire, and several models of shunts.
Our focus is on:

cognitive and behavioral disorders
memory loss including Mild Cognitive Impairment and Alzheimer's disease
frontotemporal dementia syndromes including Pick's disease
parkinsonian dementia syndromes (Lewy Body disease)
head injury and post-concussion syndromes
migraine disorders and atypical pain syndromes (Dejerine-Roussy and trigeminal neuralgia)
multiple sclerosis and variants, including confirmation of the diagnosis
nerve and muscle disorders, dystonia and sciatica

We also handle most general neurology complaints, including stroke, epilepsy, sleep disorders and neck and back injury. We welcome industrial and Workmen's Compensation patients and take most insurance plans. We specialize in the use of new approaches to pain that do not involve narcotics.
As we progress in this 21st century it is imperative that we modernize both the diagnosis of neurological disorders and their definitive management. 21st Century Neurology is involved in both education and innovative clinical and laboratory research aimed at improving the lives of people who must deal with these complex problems. Neurology has finally come into its own as a mature branch of medicine, and we are now able to offer effective treatment as well as sophisticated diagnostic methods.
